Notre Dame de Namur University plans to sell its Belmont campus to Stanford University following an agreement between the two to work toward a purchase arrangement, benefiting both in the long term.

“This agreement between NDNU and Stanford gives NDNU the flexibility to grow again in new and exciting ways,” NDNU President Beth Martin said in a press release. “We will be able to continue the programs for which we are so well known, and to add new programs directly targeted to changing student needs, including a mix of in-person, hybrid, and fully online programs.”

I applaud NDNU and Stanford for reaching this joint agreement. Everything about this deal seems both to serve short-term needs and long-term vision. As a Stanford Alum, I know the power of the commitment Stanford offers. Instead of this land becoming housing, commercial, or some other use, we are investing in the educational future of our area by creating more educational uses right here in Belmont. Of course there will be lots of particulars, but the fact NDNU was able to preserve some of its mission, instead of just selling out for the money, should be applauded!
