Eight months after the on-line delivery service Webvan ran out of gas, grocery-chain Albertsons announced it will unveil its own on-line delivery service to much of San Mateo County next Monday.
The only area that will not be served is west of Skyline Boulevard, said spokesperson Stacia Levenfeld.
The service will also go on-line in Santa Clara, San Francisco, Alameda and Contra Costa counties as well. Safeway began its on-line service in San Francisco yesterday.
Although Albertsons began online delivery in Seattle, Wash. in 1999, both companies speeded expansion since Foster City-based Webvan declared bankruptcy in July. Webvan was noted for its incredible failure despite raising $800 million in venture capital. However, spokespeople from both Safeway and Albertsons say their concept will work because it is capitalizing on its brick and mortar presence.
