The child's skull found last month in nearby mountains is that of Xiana Fairchild, a 7-year-old who disappeared in 1999, DNA test results announced Saturday confirmed.
The skull was found in the Santa Cruz Mountains on Jan. 19 and Bay Area law enforcement officials had eagerly awaited results that would close the sad and sordid case of the little girl's disappearance.
Fairchild's skull was discovered by a construction worker on a mountainous road about 60 miles south of her Vallejo home.
Only a portion of her skull and two pieces of jaw remained. DNA from a molar was compared to DNA from Fairchild's toothbrush to make the match. The Santa Clara County Sheriff's office announced the findings and said the results were 100 percent accurate, and there was no margin for error.
The Santa Clara County medical examiner said Fairchild's death was that of "homicidal violence" but would not disclose further details about her death. A high-profile search for Fairchild since her disappearance saw flurries of accusations, rifts between families and countless leads turned in to police -- but no prospect of her return ever materialized.
