Nick Lopez stalked down a hallway, gun at the ready.
His target was his buddy and sometimes arch-nemesis Augustin Garcia. As Lopez rounded a corner wearing his protective armor, Garcia jumped out from the shadows and gunned him down in a blaze of weapons fire.
The simulated combat between Lopez and Garcia was not held in the halls of a weapons training camp or at some paintball facility. The two young men, 17 and 25 respectively, were enjoying the thrill of the hunt instead by playing Halo 2, a recently released video game for Microsoft's Xbox gaming machine.
Since its release Nov. 9, Halo 2 has quickly turned into a runaway hit for the giant software company. The first person shooter, in which players follow an intriguing storyline about trying to save humanity from an evil that comes from the depths of outer space, has sold millions of copies so far.
Sales of a hot title like this are easily noticeable in local video game stores. Lopez, who works at the Gamestop location in Redwood City's Sequoia Station shopping center, talked about the game's popularity.
