What's in Season

All of us are familiar with the old proverb "An apple a day keeps the doctor away” and there is much research to suggest that apples can indeed help keep the doctor away. They come in hundreds of varieties; they taste wonderful, and are very low in calories. Packed with fiber, apples can decrease cholesterol and help protect against cancer. Apples are loaded with flavonoids such as quercetin, important for keeping blood vessels healthy, reducing inflammation and preventing cancer. The antioxidant concentration in apples is among the highest of all fruits. That’s why apples top the list of what’s in season this week at the San Mateo Farmers’ Market.
