Analysts skeptical of reported eBay interest in buying Skype
SAN FRANCISCO — Shares of eBay Inc. fell 3.8 percent Thursday after published reports said the Web auction leader was in talks to buy Net telephony phenomenon Skype Technologies SA, a prospect some analysts found illogical.
San Jose-based eBay's stock price fell $1.53 to close at $38.93 Thursday on the Nasdaq Stock Market after the Wall Street Journal reported that a price of $2 billion to $3 billion was being discussed in acquisition talks.
EBay and Skype both refused to comment on what they called rumors and speculation.
Skype's free software lets people talk for free over the Internet using computers and microphones. Calls to landline telephones are also possible at costs that, along with other low-cost Voice over Internet Protocol providers, are creating upheaval in the telecommunications industry.
Skype has 53 million registered users and the company says more than 2 million people use Skype at any given moment. Since it was introduced in 2003, the company's free software has been downloaded more than 151 million times.
Aladdin to get turned into Planet Hollywood
LAS VEGAS — A new owner of the Aladdin hotel-casino released plans Thursday to remodel the Las Vegas Strip property with a futuristic Planet Hollywood theme by the end of next year.

The property's Middle Eastern elements will be replaced with a sweeping modern design, said Robert Earl, chief executive of Planet Hollywood International and partner with resort owner OpBiz LLC.
"We're going to bring Hollywood to Vegas, and we're going to have a must-see attraction," said Earl, adding the redesign could cost up to $140 million.
The plan will reshape entrances from the Strip and the hotel's Desert Passage shopping center, presenting what Earl characterized as a "dynamic and electrifying look."
"The old Aladdin was a total screw-up," he said by telephone Thursday from Mexico City. "One of the biggest issues was access. The whole facade was just impossible to enter. We're rectifying that with a pedestrian plaza so it is an easy place to walk."
Work is due to start next month and be completed by the end of 2006. The casino and hotel will remain open while work focuses first on the casino, registration area, shops, and the addition of a race and sports book.

FDA approves inhaled insulin: Federal health advisers on Thursday recommended government approval of the first inhaled form of insulin, offering some diabetics an alternative to many of their daily injections.
The recommendation by a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel came despite questions about use of the drug in people who have lung disease or were exposed to secondhand smoke.
