Syedah Mason's death last Friday came as a surprise to people who knew her. The 22-year-old appeared healthy and active, according to her neighbor and a local storeowner who saw her frequently.
She worked at Talbot's Toy Store and attended the College of San Mateo since 1997.
Mason's father found her early in the morning, lying between her bed and nightstand, according to the San Mateo Fire Department.
Fire Captain Jeff Barile, who went to the scene immediately after the emergency call came in, said Mason was likely trying to get back into bed but did not make it.
The father, who had been trying to reach her by phone, went to her house when she did not answer, according to the San Mateo Police Department. He saw her a few days earlier, and a neighbor last saw her the day before she died.

Mason lived alone.
The county coroner's office ruled that Mason died because of a hemorrage - she was seven months pregnant and her placenta ruptured. According to Dr. Henry Hamilton, a local obstetrician, Mason's medical condition is rare, but treatable if she had sought medical help. The coroner is testing for drugs and other substances in her system, but does not expect to find anything.
The police initially handled her death as a possible homicide, and have since ceased their investigation once the coroner's report was released.
Mason, a heavy set woman, was able to conceal her pregnancy from her family who did not know she was pregnant, according to police.
Talbot's Toy Store declined to comment on Mason's death. The Daily Journal was unable to reach any of her friends or relatives to comment on her life and the circumstances of her death.
