HILLER AVIATION MUSEUM DAZZLES WITH A 20TH ANNIVERSARY DESIGN. The Hiller Aviation Museum’s new look for its 20th anniversary features an exterior paint design called “dazzle.” The paint scheme is not exactly camouflage but was applied to war ships so they would present a confusing silhouette to prowling submarines and surface vessels. The design was also applied to aircraft to thwart easy identification. The museum now presents a provocative and intriguing visage and is certainly in less danger of being sunk by U-boats than at any other time in the museum’s history. The creative design and final execution of this new treatment was done by HGA Architects, William F. Rossi Painting and The Signworks. The Hiller Aviation Museum was founded by helicopter pioneer Stanley Hiller Jr. and can trace its origins to the 1970s when a group of eclectic aircraft, collected by Stanley, was gathered in a warehouse in Redwood City but was only accessible to the general public by special appointment. The growing collection consisted of unique early aircraft, one-of-a-kind prototypes and cutting-edge test vehicles, which came from the Hiller Aircraft Company as well as other manufacturers. The Hiller Aviation Museum, located at 601 Skyway Road in San Carlos, was opened to the public in June 1998.
