Dentist to rich, famous sues Cory Lidle estate over plane crash
NEW YORK -- A dentist to the rich and famous has filed a $7 million lawsuit against the estate of late New York Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle, claiming his home was destroyed when the ballplayer's small airplane crashed into his apartment building.
Dr. Lawrence Rosenthal says in court papers that after Lidle's Cirrus SR-20 aircraft crashed into the Manhattan building where he lived with his wife and teenage son, they had to vacate their 43rd-floor apartment.
Rosenthal, whose patients include Donald Trump, Bruce Springsteen and Catherine Zeta-Jones, said his apartment sustained "severe damage, including broken windows, smoke damage, loose bricks and extensive other damage" that forced them out.
The plane, with Lidle and flight instructor Tyler Stanger aboard, hit the Upper East Side building on the 30th floor, 13 floors below Rosenthal's apartment, on Oct 11. Lidle, 34, and Stanger, 26, were killed in the crash.
Cain, Giants agree to 4-year contract
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Right-hander Matt Cain and the San Francisco Giants agreed Thursday to a $9 million, four-year contract that includes a vesting club option for 2011.
The 22-year-old Cain led rookies with 13 wins and 179 strikeouts last season, going 13-12 with a 4.15 ERA in 190 2-3 innings, finishing in a tie for fourth in NL Rookie of the Year voting. Cain also led the Giants in victories.
"It's great to have this opportunity at this age and to know that the Giants want to keep me around," Cain said. "I'm looking forward to being with these guys for the next four or five years."
His deal is similar to the $9.25 million contract left-handed starter Noah Lowry received before last season for the same number of years.
Cain pitched a one-hitter in the Giants' 6-0 victory over Oakland on May 21.
He started last season 1-5 with a 7.04 ERA over his initial seven starts and had his turn in the rotation skipped during a May trip to Houston. He made one relief appearance, then was 12-7 with a 3.34 ERA in his final 24 outings, which included the two innings out of the bullpen.
Sabean heard requests all offseason from teams interested in acquiring Cain, but the Giants were determined to hold onto their talented young pitchers. The Giants selected him 25th overall in the first round of the 2002 amateur draft.

Young agrees to return to 49ers
SAN FRANCISCO -- Defensive lineman Bryant Young agreed Thursday to return for a 14th season with the San Francisco 49ers.
Young, who signed a one-year deal, is the 49ers' longest-tenured player and the sole remaining roster link to their last Super Bowl victory following his rookie season in 1994. The four-time Pro Bowl selection spent most of his career as a defensive tackle before moving to end in the last two years under coach Mike Nolan.
The 49ers' consecutive seasons of improvement under Nolan's watch motivated Young to postpone retirement for at least another year.
"We're on the verge, the cusp of just being right there," Young said of the 49ers, who finished 7-9. "I thought we left something on the table last year, and with the addition of a few more pieces, we're going to be right in the mix.
"Part of it is wanting to be part of finishing work and leaving the 49ers organization like I found it."
Young, whose 83 career sacks are third in team history, spent two months after the season contemplating retirement with his family. But Nolan led the lobbying efforts to retain his locker-room leadership, and Young still was confident he could maintain his steady play.
Ducks, Kings to open NHL
regular season in London
NEW YORK -- The NHL will play regular-season games for the first time in Europe with the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings opening the 2007-2008 season by playing two games in London.
The games are set for Sept. 29-30 at the O2 Arena, which is set to open in July. It is being built by Anschutz Entertainment Group, the Kings' parent company.
It is not the first time regular-season games have been played outside North America. The Ducks played the Vancouver Canucks twice to open the 1997-98 season in Tokyo. San Jose and Calgary opened the 1998-99 season in Tokyo, and the Pittsburgh Penguins and Nashville Predators opened the 2000-01 season on the outskirts of Tokyo.
It will be the third trip to London by the NHL. In 1992, the Chicago Blackhawks and Montreal Canadiens played preseason games at the Wembley Arena, as did the New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs in 1993.
