Ken Houle, a 35-year member of the Serra High School faculty as well as baseball manager and athletic director, died Tuesday according to a statement sent to Serra alumni.
Ken Houle is the grandfather of current Serra teacher and baseball manager Chris Houle.

Ken Houle, who came to Serra as a teacher in 1955 shortly after the school moved to its current location on 20th Avenue in San Mateo and named a “founding father” in the statement, led the Serra baseball program for 20 years, from. He won Catholic Athletic League (CAL) titles in 1959, 1960 and 1962. During his time as manager, he coached several future Major League Baseball players, including Jim Fregosi, Tim Cullen and Dan Frisella.
Houle was instrumental in the formation of the West Catholic Athletic League (WCAL) which began in 1967.

Houle also coached basketball and junior varsity football, in addition to teaching business finance, accounting, algebra, geometry, English and PE.
In 1959, Houle took over as the school’s athletic director, a position he held for nearly 20 years, stepping down in 1977. When Houle retired in 1990, the school named its athletic facilities after him: the Kenneth R. Houle Athletic Complex.
After Houle graduated with a bachelor’s degree in teaching from College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, he eventually started his teaching career at a small Catholic high school in North Dakota. He moved to Modesto Junior College prior to arriving at Serra.
A rosary and vigil for Houle will begin at 7 p.m. May 22 at Calvary Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleum at 7101 Verner Ave. in Sacramento. A funeral mass will begin at 11 a.m. May 23 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at 307 Montrose Drive in Folsom.
