DETROIT (AP) — Riley Greene homered and Kevin McGonigle drove in two runs as the Detroit Tigers beat Gerrit Cole for the first time in 10 years, winning 5-3 against the New York Yankees on Monday night.
Framber Valdez (4-5) outpitched Cole, giving up one run on four hits and two walks in six innings. The left-hander struck out eight as the Tigers won their fourth straight game.
Cole (2-2) entered 10-1 with a 1.84 ERA in 14 career starts against Detroit, with his only loss coming as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 14, 2016. But the 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner wasn’t very sharp this time, allowing five runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out five.
Minus injured slugger Aaron Judge, the Yankees have lost three in a row and four of five. They still have the best record in the American League at 46-31.
ROYALS 2, RAYS 1
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Michael Wacha allowed one run over seven strong innings while Lane Thomas and Carter Jensen had RBIs to push Kansas City past Tampa Bay.
Wacha (5-5) allowed six hits, walked one and struck out five. The former Rays pitcher held Tampa Bay to 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position and didn’t allow a run until Yandy Díaz’s two-out double in the fifth plated Richie Palacios from first.
Kansas City got on the board in the second when Michael Massey drew a walk, just the second issued over a four-start stretch by Rays starter Drew Rasmussen (6-4). Massey scored from first on a double by Thomas.
Rasmussen then sat down 10 in a row before Jensen’s fifth-inning single drove in Nick Loftin, who’d singled and stole second. After Jensen’s hit, Rays pitchers retired the final 14 in order but Tampa Bay couldn’t touch Wacha. The right-hander leads the American League with 11 quality starts this season.
Wacha got 10 ground-ball outs and Kansas City earned its fourth win in five games.
RANGERS 4, MARLINS 3
MIAMI (AP) — Brandon Nimmo had three hits and walked once, Alejandro Osuna hit a go-ahead RBI double and Texas beat Miami.
Ezequiel Duran homered and Joc Pederson singled twice for the Rangers in the opener of a 10-game road trip.
The loss snapped the Marlins’ eight-game home win streak.
For the second time in two weeks, the Tartan Army made its presence felt at a major league game that featured the Rangers. Scotland fans are in Miami for the national team’s World Cup match against Brazil on Wednesday and many attended Monday’s series opener bumping the attendance to 20,008. The lively atmosphere in the stands, including the popular chant, “No Scotland, No Party,” resembled the Rangers-Red Sox game at Fenway Park on June 14.
Nimmo doubled against Marlins reliever Calvin Faucher (4-4) to lead off the eighth and Jake Burger followed with a walk. Osuna then hit a one-out line drive to right that scored Nimmo and snapped a 2-all tie. Burger advanced to third and raced home scored on Elias Diaz’s sacrifice fly.

Cease allowed two runs and three hits with four walks in 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out eight and retired 14 in a row before issuing one-out walks to Yordan Alvarez and Christian Walker in the sixth. Paredes lined out to left field, but Jose Altuve tied it at 2 with a two-strike single on Cease’s 110th and final pitch.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Shohei Ohtani hit a leadoff home run, Freddie Freeman also went deep to break a sixth-inning tie and Los Angeles beat Minnesota.
Eric Lauer (3-5) pitched six hitless innings for Los Angeles after opener Will Klein allowed Byron Buxton’s homer in the first. Freeman’s 13th of the season helped the Dodgers win after losing back-to-back games for the first time since May 11-12.
Tanner Scott converted his 10th save in 11 chances, but Los Angeles lost outfielder Kyle Tucker and catcher Dalton Rushing during the game. Tucker left in the second with low back spasms, and Rushing was pulled in the third to get checked for a concussion.
Ohtani didn’t take long to give the large contingent of Dodgers fans reason to celebrate, hitting the second pitch of the game deep into the plaza in right field. An 87 mph changeup in the middle of the zone from Minnesota starter Zebby Matthews left Ohtani’s bat at 112.8 mph and cleared the right-field seats at Target Field.
Ohtani has four homers and 10 RBIs in 13 career games at the ballpark. It was his sixth leadoff homer this season and seventh in 17 games in June.

ROCKIES 3, RED SOX 2
DENVER (AP) — Jake McCarthy hit a three-run triple down the left-field line in the ninth inning and Colorado rallied to beat the Boston.
The Rockies started the inning with three straight singles off All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman (0-3) before McCarthy sent a liner that hit off the wall and bounded away from left fielder Jarren Duran. The carom allowed Cole Carrigg to slide in headfirst with the winning run.
Soon after, McCarthy was swarmed by excited teammates.
Colorado’s rally offset a pair of baserunning blunders that ended the eighth. The Rockies had a runner thrown out at home and another get tagged out after being caught between second and third base when a runner in front of him stopped at third.
McCarthy’s ninth-inning heroics spoiled a stellar outing by Red Sox rookie Jake Bennett, who threw six sharp innings while striking out nine. He allowed four hits.
Colorado starter Ryan Feltner threw six solid innings, allowing two runs. Victor Vodnik (2-2) earned the win by pitching two scoreless innings.
