Pirates' Ryan O'Hearn sets club record with 10 RBIs during 3-homer night vs. Braves

O’Hearn’s big night broke the franchise record of nine RBIs set by Johnny Rizzo against St. Louis on May 30, 1939. The 10 RBIs by O’Hearn — who signed a multi-year free agent deal to join the Pirates in the offseason — also marked the most in the majors by a player this year.

O’Hearn missed a chance to join the exclusive four-homer club when he singled in the ninth.

An All-Star last season while splitting time between Baltimore and San Diego, O’Hearn also became the 16th player in Pittsburgh’s 145-year history to hit three homers in a game.

CUBS 5, ORIOLES 2

BALTIMORE (AP) — Matthew Boyd pitched six shutout innings, Alex Bregman drove in two runs and Chicago beat Baltimore.

Miguel Amaya scored three times for the Cubs, who have won 11 of 14 to tighten their grip on the top spot in the NL wild card.

Making his third start since being sidelined for seven weeks with a knee injury, Boyd (4-1) allowed three hits, struck out seven and walked two. The left-hander is 2-0 with a 1.72 ERA since returning from the injured list on June 25.

Cubs reliever Ryan Rolison entered in the seventh with a 4-0 lead and promptly gave up two singles and a walk to load the bases. Adley Rutschman delivered a two-out, two-run single off former Oriole Jacob Webb before Gunnar Henderson struck out.

Tyler Ferguson worked a perfect eighth and Trent Thornton got three straight outs for his second save.

TIGERS 6, ATHLETICS 2

DETROIT (AP) — Tarik Skubal struck out nine over five innings and Colt Keith hit a two-run homer to lead Detroit to a victory over the Athletics.

Skubal (5-4) struck out the side in the first inning for the second time in his career and left after 96 pitches. The left-hander allowed five hits and walked two. His only blemish came on rookie Henry Bolte’s third homer, a leadoff shot in the third that cut it to 2-1.

Kevin McGonigle, headed to the All-Star Game as a rookie, drew an eight-pitch walk from J.T. Ginn (7-5) leading off the first and Keith hit his next pitch for his seventh homer and a lead the Tigers never relinquished. Detroit (41-50) has won three straight and six of its last seven games.

Kyle Finnegan pitched a scoreless sixth following Skubal, and Drew Anderson allowed Shea Langeliers’ RBI single for an unearned run in the seventh. Jacob Waguespack closed it out with two perfect innings.

Ginn left in favor of Jacob Lopez after allowing two runs on two hits in four innings.

Detroit broke it open with a four-run sixth after Lopez retired the first two batters.

MARLINS 6, MARINERS 5, 10 INNINGS

MIAMI (AP) — Jakob Marsee hit a game-ending single off the wall in right field in the 10th inning, and Miami beat Seattle Mariners 6-5 on Tuesday night.

With runners at the corners and one out, Marsee hit a high drive against Michael Rucker (0-2) to easily score automatic runner Xavier Edwards.

Cade Gibson (2-0) got three outs in the top half, erasing automatic runner Weston Wilson on his first pitch when he induced a fielder’s-choice grounder to shortstop by Cal Raleigh.

Pinch-hitter Heriberto Hernández led off the eighth for the Marlins with a 422-foot homer to left, his 12th of the season, to tie the game at 5-all. Owen Caissie also hit his 12th for Miami, a solo shot in the second.

RAYS 6, YANKEES 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Hunter Feduccia and Yandy Diaz hit consecutive home runs in the fourth inning, Ian Seymour struck out 12 and Tampa Bay beat New York.

Victor Mesa Jr. also homered, and Richie Palacios had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run for the Rays, who extended their lead in the AL East over the Yankees to four games.

Seymour (6-1) allowed three runs on five hits without a walk in 5 1/3 innings. Bryan Baker worked a scoreless ninth for his 24th save.

The Yankees struck out 17 times against five Tampa Bay pitchers and became the first American League team whose batters struck out 17 times in consecutive nine-inning games. New York fanned 17 times in a 5-1 win over the Rays on Monday night.

Paul Goldschmidt and Jose Caballero each struck out four times. Goldschmidt is in an 0-for-30 slide. New York’s slumping offense had 11 hits, reaching double digits for the first time since June 17.

ASTROS 6, NATIONALS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) — Jose Altuve homered, Nick Allen drove in a season-high three runs and Houston beat Washington.

Christian Vázquez drove in two for Houston, which has won three of four.

James Wood hit his 25th home run for Washington, which lost for the third time in four games. The Nationals left 11 men on base and were 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position.

Houston trailed 2-1 before a three-run fourth inning against Andrew Alvarez. After the Astros loaded the bases with one out, Allen slapped a two-run single to left. After Brice Matthews and Allen executed a double steal, Matthews scored on Vázquez’s sacrifice fly.

Vázquez chased Alvarez (2-2) with an RBI single in the sixth. Alvarez allowed five runs on four hits and five walks in 5 2/3 innings.

Altuve homered with two outs in the eighth into the visitor’s bullpen, where teammate Bryan Abreu caught it between warmup pitches. It was Altuve’s 10th homer of the year, and his second in two nights.

PHILLIES 4, REDS 1

CINCINNTI (AP) — Zack Wheeler tied a career high with 14 strikeouts, Kyle Schwarber hit his major league-best 31st home run of the season, and Philadelphia beat Cincinnati.

The Phillies got on the board in the third inning when Trea Turner had an RBI groundout for a 1-0 lead and Schwarber hit a two-run shot over the right-center field wall to finish a three-run inning.

Derek Hill doubled and Justin Crawford singled to put runners at the corners to get things started.

Turner scored in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Edmundo Sosa.

Wheeler (9-1) threw 104 pitches over seven innings. He allowed four hits, an earned run, but no walks. Jhoan Duran earned his 22nd save of the year, striking out all three batters in the ninth.

Eugenio Suárez hit a solo home run for the Reds in the seventh.

TWINS 3, GUARDIANS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Taj Bradley allowed one run and struck out 10 in seven innings, Kody Clemens had two hits and an RBI, and Minnesota beat Cleveland.

Bradley (8-3), who set a career best with 11 strikeouts in his last outing July 1 at Houston, had swing-and-miss stuff all night, registering a career-high 25 swinging strikes. He allowed three hits and walked none, winning for the third time in his last four starts.

Andrew Morris pitched a perfect eighth inning, while Taylor Rogers and Yoendrys Gómez combined on a scoreless ninth for the Twins, who have won six of their last eight games

Rhys Hoskins homered for the Guardians, who lost their third in a row.

Joey Cantillo (7-4) pitched five innings, giving up two runs — both unearned — on six hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

BREWERS 4, CARDINALS 3, 1ST GAME

BREWERS 10, CARDINALS 2, 2ND GAME

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Joey Ortiz homered, Robert Gasser pitched a career-high 7 2/3 innings and Milwaukee beat St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday night to complete a doubleheader sweep.

Jacob Misiorowski struck out 11 in the first game of the split doubleheader, which was a makeup from May 5, and the Brewers won 4-3.

Milwaukee has won four straight games and seven in a row against St. Louis. The Cardinals lost their fourth straight.

Gasser (2-3) allowed just a two-run homer to Nelson Velázquez. He struck out four, walked one and scattered four hits.

Cooper Pratt gave the Brewers a 1-0 lead with a leadoff triple in the third inning and scored on a Christian Yelich groundout.

Luis Lara, in his major league debut, got his first hit and RBI with a two-run single that gave the Brewers a 3-0 lead in the fifth.

Milwaukee broke it open with seven runs against Cardinals reliever Jared Shuster in the seventh. Ortiz started the outburst with a solo homer and Brice Turang, Gary Sánchez, Jackson Chourio and Pratt followed with RBI hits.
