In what has become a premier baseball matchup over the past couple of seasons, Serra and Burlingame didn't disappoint Saturday night at Washington Park.
For the third time in three years, the Padres and Panthers locked up in a thrilling battle with Serra coming out on top yet again, this time by a score of 4-1.
The two teams were tied at 1 heading into the top of the seventh when Serra (6-1) scored three times to clinch the win. Kenny Tuner led off the inning with a double off Burlingame starter Eric Fregosi, who was the hard-luck loser. In six-plus innings of work, Fregosi gave up two runs on seven hits. Anthony Edwards relieved Fregosi and the first batter he faced put down a sacrifice bunt that was booted to put runners at the corners. Edwards got a grounder to Logan Feethy at shortstop, who fired home to get Turner trying to score from third. Edwards hit the next batter to load the bases and Chuck Lofgren walked to force home the game-winning run.
Serra added some insurance when Jesse Lehane singled and Doug Hansen drew a bases loaded walk to drive in the final run of the game.
Lofgren, who picked up the win to improve to 3-0 on the season, was just as impressive as he had been in his previous two outings. He gave up only one run on one hit in six innings of work. Lehane picked up the save.
Lofgren held Burlingame (5-2) hitless until the fourth inning but lost the no-hit bid and shutout in the same inning. Henry Wrigley drew a one-out walk and Ryan Peterson was hit by a pitch. Dominic Mitchell followed a drilled a double to left-center field to plate Wrigley and tie the score at 1.
Serra got on the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Lehane led off the inning with a single to right and Anthony Stoloski followed with a triple to deep left-center field to score Lehane. The Padres had a chance to break the game open but fine defensive efforts by the Panthers limited the damage to just one run.
