This season marks volleyball coach Rex Mauga-Head’s silver anniversary running the program at Westmoor, an amiable and popular figure on the Daly City campus has invested in a rebuild since the Lady Rams took a downturn in 2023.
Westmoor (2-3 PAL Ocean, 4-12 overall) is still a ways off regaining form — one that saw the varsity squad win 20 overall matches three times from 2013-17 — but Thursday was a rare bright spot as the Rams rallied for an 18-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-22 home victory over Terra Nova (1-4, 3-14). With the win, Mauga-Head’s team earned back-to-back wins for the first time since Oct. 25 and 29, 2022.
Westmoor also swept Tuesday at South City 25-18, 25-11, 25-14. The previous week, the Rams dropped back-to-back PAL Ocean matches, but won three sets against a pair of teams tied for second place in the process. They took El Camino to five sets, falling 21-25, 25-21, 25-16, 18-25, 15-8, before falling in four sets to Mills 25-21, 25-18, 23-25, 25-7.

NDB trailed 14-10 in the final set when sophomore libero Piper Ventura stepped to the service line, bringing the Tigers back from the abyss and junior middle Ella McKinney scoring a block to tie it 14-all. Menlo sophomore Alex Fair earned a side-out with a kill to force extra points, but NDB took the advantage on a Gia Rivera kill before McKinney and junior Vivienne Butler raised the roof by teaming on the double block to win it.
In Game 3, the Tigers held two late leads, including set point at 26-25. But the Lady Knights rallied to take the set, punctuated by a block from sophomore Elena Gordon.
