While the Serra Padres traveled to the City for their third straight West Catholic Athletic League win, running back Andrew Takapautolo went to town. The junior — who entered the day with 115 yards rushing on the season — took 17 carries for a career-high 152 yards and two touchdowns to front the victory.
With the game tied 14-all at the half, the Padres (3-0 WCAL, 3-3 overall) scored 20 unanswered points in the second half to down Sacred Heart Cathedral (1-2, 3-3) at George Rush Stadium on the campus of City College of San Francisco.
Serra rushed for 292 yards, while senior Iziah Singleton also touched triple digits, totaling 15 carries for 100 yards and one touchdown. Quarterbacks Caleb Bandel and William Orr each threw for a touchdown, with senior Brody Smith and junior Charlie Walsh totaling one scoring catch apiece.
SHC quarterback Michael Sargent was 13-of-27 passing for 229 yards and two touchdowns, one to junior Zion Secrease and the other to sophomore Germaine Powell. But the Padres sacked Sargent six times and totaled three interceptions, two picks from junior Malakai Taufoou while junior Lemani Fehoko had one interception and two sacks. Freshman Taupaki Latu led the pass rush with three sacks, and senior Peyton Thomas added one.
Joey Donati passed for one touchdown and rushed for another as Terra Nova (2-0 PAL El Camino, 4-2 overall) topped South City (1-1, 2-4) in a defensive battle at Coach Gray Stadium.
The Tigers gained just 210 total yards of offense, but Donati led the way. The senior quarterback was 5-of-11 passing for 90 yards with a scoring strike to senior Austin Snead, and added nine carries for a team-high 55 yards and another score. Snead finished with 105 total yards, with 18 carries for 47 yards, and two catches for 48 yards.
With the win, first-place Terra Nova is the only unbeaten team remaining in PAL El Camino Division play.
The Grizzlies (3-0 PAL Lake, 4-2 overall) scored 21 first-half points and never trailed to take control atop the PAL Lake Division standings with the home win over MacDonald-San Jose (2-1, 5-1). Jefferson is now the only unbeaten team remaining in league play in the eight-team PAL Lake.
Sophomore defensive end Kendrick Carr capped the first-quarter barrage with a 50-yard return on a scoop-and-score fumble recovery. The Grizzlies added 20 points in the third quarter, highlighted by a pick-6 interception by senior defensive back Yazan Janhib. Senior quarterback Robert Saulny-Green added two rushing touchdowns, and senior running back Dominic Howard rushed for a TD.
The Vikings (1-2 PAL Lake, 2-4 overall) dropped their second straight in PAL Lake Division play, falling at Monte Vista-Cupertino (1-2, 3-3). Junior receiver Kosta Jada fronted the aerial attack for Mills, totaling nine catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Jayden Carmona added a touchdown reception, as sophomore quarterback Brian Lourenco was 15-of-28 passing for 187 yards and three touchdowns and one interception.
El Camino (2-2 PAL Lake, 3-3 overall) took a 17-14 lead early in the fourth quarter, but Saratoga (2-1, 4-2) rode a 7-yard scoring run from Anson Hulme with four minutes to play to the victory. The Colts drove their closing possession into Saratoga territory, but turned the ball over on downs at the Falcons’ 45 to all but end it.
