San Mateo’s Yianni Fitzgerald, shown here during the 2025 PAL championships, captured the 2026 discus title as the Bearcats swept the top-three spots Thursday.
The high school track and field postseason is already upon us, with the beginning of the Peninsula Athletic League championships getting underway at Sequoia High School Thursday.
The day was one not only of qualifying in 11 of the 16 events, but also one where titles were decided as a handful of the field events were championship finals Thursday. Because of space limitations, the field events — shot put, discus, pole vault, high jump, long jump and triple jump, along with the girls’ 4x800 championship race — were held Thursday. The corresponding opposite event will be contested at the PAL finals next Saturday, May 9 at Sequoia.
The boys’ and girls’ 3,200 races, along with the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, will be contested on the final day of the championships, May 9.
Girls’ 4x800 relay
The Carlmont team of Alexandra Farrell, Katelyn Elliott, Daniela Cuadros and Isabella Schuett, a freshman, combined to not only crush the field in the 4x800 final, they did it in record-setting fashion.
Their time of 9:28.27 was not only more than 12 seconds faster than the second-place time of 9:40.94 by Burlingame, it destroyed the former record of 9:35.75 — also set by Carlmont. Both Elliott and Cuadros featured on that relay team, as well.
Carlmont and Burlingame were the only two teams to come in under 10 minutes. Menlo-Atherton was third in a time of 10:08.58, San Mateo fourth with a 10:11.25 and Mills rounded out the top five with a time of 10:11.83.
Boys’ triple jump
Westmoor’s Benicio Labuguen not only won the PAL triple jump title, he soared to a new PAL record. His leap of 48-1 was not only better than the 42-5 put up by Hillsdale’s Jakob Gowdy, he flew past the previous record of 47-3.75, set by Woodside’s Semanu Attiogbe in 2016.
Mills’ Jayden Xie (42-3), Woodside’s Mateus Bassi Breda (41-9) and Westmoor’s Rayhan Anees (40-3.75) all qualified for CCS.
Girls’ long jump
Carlmont’s Emerson Barajas won the PAL title with a new PAL record. Her leap of 18-1.5 eclipsed the previous mark of 18-0.5, set by Sequoia’s Mercedes Marchbanks in 2005.
Barajas was the only jumper to go over 18 feet. Mills’ Alexis Ivankov was second with a mark of 17-1, San Mateo’s Kaitlyn Schuh (16-7), Rona Elan (16-5) of Hillsdale and Mills’ Melaine Fong (16-3.75) rounded out the top five.
Boys’ discus
San Mateo went 1-2-3 in the PAL discus finals, with Yianni Fitzgerald’s throw of 157-04 being nearly 13 feet better than Lucas Hyndman, who was second with a distance of 144-05. Roman Toki rounded out the Bearcats sweep with a mark of 141-00.

Aragon’s Jason Liu (136-10) and San Mateo’s Dean Qutteineh (135-08) finished fourth and fifth to qualify for CCS.
Woodside’s Evan Usher set the PAL record last year with a toss of 167-5.
Fitzgerald will go for the double throws titles in the shot put, where he has the third-best distance in CCS at 59-4.5
Girls’ shot put
Mills’ Kelailah Johnson grabbed the first leg of a doubles throw championship by claiming the shot put title with a throw of 36-1. That easily bettered San Mateo’s Rachel Shomaker, who was second with a mark of 34-7.25. And she more than three feet better than M-A’s Fane Mataele, who finished third with a throw of 31-7.
Izzy Erickson (Burlingame, 30-9) and Julia Eliares (Terra Nova, 29-4.5) finished fourth and fifth to qualify for CCS.
The PAL record of 44-1.5 was set by Terra Nova’s Carly Watts in 2019.
Johnson will go for the discus double next weekend.
Girls’ pole vault
Katherine Cueva of Menlo-Atherton, the top-ranked vaulter in CCS, captured the PAL title with a height of 11-2. Her season best is 12 feet set back on March 14. Mills’ Alexis Ivankov was the only other vaulter to clear 10 feet, finishing second with a mark of 10-8. She has a season best of 11-0 this season.
Carlmont’s Hailey Dao (9-8), M-A’s Liliana Pellican (9-0) and Sequoia’s Abigail Machemer (9-0) rounded out the top five.
Burlingame’s Avery Boyse set the PAL record last year with a height of 13-0.
Boys’ high jump
Zeki Soudah of Hillsdale, whose personal record of 6-4 was the fourth-best in CCS this season, captured the PAL title with a jump of 6-2, two inches better than Woodside’s Aaron Sanchez.
They were the only two to clear six feet. M-A Kyle Gabriel (5-10), San Mateo’s Liam Ely (5-8), Burlingame’s Ryan Huie (5-6) and Mills’ Andrew Liu (5-4) rounded out the CCS qualifiers.
