Alpine 6, Pacifica 4
Alpine held off a late rally by Pacifica in the elimination-round semifinals at District Field to advance to the championship round of the District 52 11s tournament.
Trailing 6-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Pacifica rallied for four runs, including a three-run home run from MJ Spears. Pacifica went on to load the bases with two outs, but Alpine closer Brandon Pyle induced a grounder to third baseman Greyson Davis, who stepped on the bag for the game’s final out.
Alpine starting pitcher Connor Murphy and Pacifica starter Jackson Painter locked up for a scoreless duel through three innings. Alpine broke through in the fourth with a two-run home run by Ryan Cohen. Then in the fifth, Alpine added on with a two-run single from Everett Bochnowski, an RBI single from Jack Schneider, and a sacrifice fly from Murphy to open up a 6-0 lead.
Cohen was 3 for 3 with a double, a home run and two RBIs on the day. Bochnowski added two hits and two RBIs, while Tommy Brock and Rhys Adam added two hits apiece.
Murphy worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings before Pyle entered with the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth. He escaped the jam, but got into trouble in the sixth when Jake Schaible led off with a single to right, and Mason Agbulos reached on an error. Pyle retired the next two batters before Spears connected for a three-run homer to center. Pacifica proceeded to load the bases with a walk to RJ Villazon, and back-to-back singles from Lincoln Balagot and Miles Tucker.
Spears went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, while Preston Diao added two hits for Pacifica.
With the win, Alpine advances to the championship round Monday at 5:30 p.m. to face San Mateo National. The two teams have yet to meet in the tournament. With National advancing through the winners’ bracket, they need win only once to claim the District 52 11s championship banner, whereas Alpine must win twice. An if-necessary game is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
