With the game tied 4-4 in the third, Alpine rallied for five runs and led the rest of the way in an all-out battle with San Mateo American in the winners’ bracket semifinal at Trinta Park.
Alpine rallied for three runs in the top of the first, but American swung ahead with four in the bottom of the frame, taking the lead on a two-run triple by Ronan Chumas. Alpine tied it in the top of the second on an RBI groundout from Patrick Low Ah Kee to score Cole Shortal. Then in the third, Alpine jumped ahead on a two-run single by Wilson Shank.
American kept up the pressure, though. In the fourth, they closed it to 9-7 on an RBI single from Jojo Piazza. After Alpine scored once in the top of the fifth when Tommy Masters swiped home on a double steal, American scored twice in the bottom of the frame with a solo home run from Max Johnson and an RBI single by Chumas.
In the sixth, Traxton Kaho singled with two outs to keep the extend the game. But Alpine reliever Charlie Katz closed it out to earn the save, finishing out 2 2/3 innings of work. Keegan Wolf earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out four.
Johnson, Piazza and Kaho pitched for American.
Shortal and Tommy Masters recorded three hits apiece for Alpine. Chumas, Kaho and Koa Rosenberg recorded two hits apiece for American.
Redwood City 9, Palo Alto 4
Redwood City scored once in the first and five more in the second, and powered to the win over Palo Alto in the quarterfinals of the elimination bracket at Trinta Park.
Carlo Minitti went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, and Matthew Larsen added two hits with a walk and two RBIs to pace RWC. Larsen earned the win as RWC’s starting pitcher, going 4 1/3 innings while giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits, one walk and one hit batter while striking out four. Brennan Newby closed it out with 1 2/3 innings of relief.
Palo Alto was paced by Alex Sung’s 2-for-3 day at the plate. Paly pitched Ciaran Kuchinski, Thunder Pagano-Alfrey and Colin Blanco.
