Orioles third in Vegas tournament
The San Mateo Post 82 19-and-under baseball team went 4-2 and finished third out of 16 teams in the Timet Wood Bat Tournament in Las Vegas.
San Mateo (20-6 overall) went 2-1 in pool play last week and won its first two games in the playoffs.
Taking on Ray Lankford Academy of Modesto in the semifinals Sunday, the Orioles saw their run come to an end with a 5-3 loss. Pat Whelly, Brock Parsons and Nick Monroe each drove in a run for San Mateo in the loss. Jon Ponzo was 2 for 3.
In their first playoff game, the Orioles crushed the Nevada Stampede 10-0 in a game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule. Alex Augustyn threw a four hitter while Nick Robinson drove in four runs. Monroe had three RBIs and Ryan Peterson drove in a pair.
In the quarterfinals, San Mateo beat Ripon 5-2, behind Peterson's complete-game effort. Peterson scattered six hits in picking up the win.
The Orioles scored all their runs in the fourth and fifth innings and then endured a bases-loaded situation in the seventh before putting Ripon away.
San Mateo earned a spot in the playoffs by finishing second in pool play with a 2-1 record. The Orioles opened the tournament with a 3-2 win over Kailua, Hawaii before losing to the East Bay Colts, 8-5. They secured their spot in the playoffs with a 14-4 win over host Timet, scoring 10 runs in the top of the sixth inning.

San Carlos sweeps Belmont
The San Carlos Joe DiMaggio squad improved to 12-0 in league play by taking a pair from Belmont Sunday at Burton Park, 9-5 and 11-9.
In Game 1, San Carlos scored single runs in the first and second innings before Belmont (2-10 in league, 3-14 overall) scored four in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.
San Carlos responded with seven runs in the bottom of the frame and never looked back.
Ryan Scoma had two RBIs to lead the San Carlos offense while Wade Reynoso, Tyler Kaher and Ben Edelstein each had two hits for the winners. Matt Denys and Clark Fleming had two hits apiece for Belmont.
Game 2 saw San Carlos jump out to a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Belmont battled back to within a run with a three-run second. San Carlos got some breathing room, taking a 9-4 lead with a four-run fifth, but Belmont countered with a four-run sixth to close to within 9-8. San Carlos came right back two in the bottom of the frame. Belmont added one more in the seventh.
The two teams combined for 26 hits in Game 2, with Belmont's David Alonzo, Ryan Moskovitz and Beau Witsoe each cracking doubles. Witsoe also had a triple and Moskovitz drove in a game-high four runs.
Scoma, Reynoso and Brad Bauer had doubles for San Carlos. Scoma and Reynoso each drove in three runs while Bauer and Kevin Hinsch each had two RBIs.
