In a valiant effort against a team that was simply taller, shot better, and more organized, the San Mateo Bearcats lost their semi-final match in the Burlingame Tournament 54-31 against Notre Dame High.
Notre Dame center Jakki Flaherty was 8-for-15 shooting with 16 points and 10 rebounds. At 6-foot-2-inches tall, she presented big matchup problems for the Bearcats, who could not contend with her height inside. Other fine performances for the Tigers were delivered by Hillary Hansen, who had nine points, eight rebounds and four assists, and Jennifer Tantillo with 13 points.
Notre Dame led 29-16 at halftime and 42-20 with a minute to go in the third quarter. Over the next five minutes the Bearcats went on an 11-2 run, but were put back in check by a Notre Dame 10-0 run to end the game.
Emily deLong led the Bearcats with 12 points, followed by Francesca Castelluci with 11 and Kathryn Landau with 4.
San Mateo Head Coach Cedell Clayton was pleased with the scoring run that closed the lead to 13 in the third quarter, but said "We did a lot of standing around. We got caught up in who we were playing, and it made us tentative. Being smaller, we needed to set more screens and do the little things that are important. We have some things to work on in practice."
