A Burlingame man accused of choking his girlfriend before jumping from a cliff pleaded no contest to felony domestic violence and felony criminal threats in court on Monday.
Clovis Alberto Furtado De Menezes, 23, agreed to accept a prison sentence of up to two years, San Mateo County Deputy District Attorney Morris Maya said yesterday. De Menezes was arrested Feb. 23, nearly a week after a violent argument culminated with De Menezes jumping off a cliff at Devil's Slide.
At 5 a.m. Feb. 17, police responded to a domestic violence call in the 1000 block of Rollins Road in Burlingame. A woman told police that De Menezes had strangled her during a violent argument. De Menezes had fled the scene.
A sheriff's deputy later discovered De Menezes' vehicle, containing an apparent suicide note, parked on the roadway edge along state Highway 1 at Devil's Slide.
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter spotted De Menezes on the rocks about 500 feet down a cliff. De Menezes, who at first resisted rescue attempts, was admitted to the hospital with serious injuries, including a broken leg.Â
