The average West Coast longshoreman earns between $80,000 and $158,000 a year. Some dockworkers, like highly skilled crane workers, earn as much as $300,000 a year.
Which is why it must be hard to understand why the International Longshore and Warehouse Union would be so aggrieved that it is threatening a West Coast dock shutdown.
The contract between ILWU and the Pacific Maritime Association officially expired on July 1. The two sides agreed to extend the terms of the contract day by day until (this week) ...(and) a strike, a slowdown or a lockout is possible.
