I must address the highly incorrect assertion in "Other voices: What Hamas and its foes must do" in the Feb.4 edition of the Daily Journal that calls Israel's disengagement "unilateralism whereby Israel is setting new borders to an enlarged state."
Israel's boundaries were determined by the United Nations when it adopted the partition resolution in 1947. Israel captured additional territory only as a result of defensive wars imposed on it by its Arab neighbors.
On numerous occasions, Israel has withdrawn from these areas in return for a peace agreement as when the Sinai was returned to Egypt in 1979. The conflict with the Palestinians could have concluded similarly if Arafat would have accepted 97 percent of all he was asking for in exchange for peace and an end to the conflict from Barak and Clinton at Camp David and Taba in 2001. Instead, Arafat went home to start the intifada. Funny -- that scene is missing from the opinion piece.
The reason that Israel is proceeding without Palestinian agreement to bring about what everyone knows must happen anyway, is that there is no Palestinian leader with whom to negotiate, no figure who both opposes terror and has his people's support for peace.
