Over the past few months, various editorials of the Wall Street Journal have honestly evaluated Trump: “Trump will govern as a make-it-up-as-he-goes tactician rather than as a strategist with a coherent policy guide. He’ll dodge and weave based on the news cycle and often based on who talked to him last.”
Is this the behavior of a leader?
“Thinking that Mr. Trump cares about anyone’s ideas other than his own. He governs on feral instinct, tactical opportunism, and what seems popular at a given moment … . Mr. Trump is never going to have a governing platform. Oh, and anyone who becomes a political liability to Mr. Trump is expendable.”
I wonder does that include long-term European allies?
In the most recent commentary in the conservative WSJ, the writer said, “By my calculation, about one-third of Mr. Trump’s remarks fell into three categories: false, obscure or lunatic. I’m not even talking about the usual grotesque hyperbolic assertions or baffling verbal manufactures.”

We used to call people with these values and behavior — ugly Americans. And, professionals in international education, like me, used this as a foil to teach American students planning to study abroad to avoid this type of behavior; not to act like ugly Americans.
What could we teach our students and our children today when an entire American political party not only excuses this type of behavior but seems to endorse it?
I agree with many of your comments about Trump but the alternative is even worse. Kamala will drive our government into deeper debt and a recession and voters will regret having voted for her. And just ask yourself who would Putin of Xi would rather negotiate with - Kamala or Trump?
Is there ever any doubt who dictators like that would prefer? Trump, of course, so easily fooled and manipulated, a fake compliment makes him melt in their hands, while he doesn’t have a clue to how they are playing him! Get real, Ed!
There is a beauty posted by SanMateo111. He/she mentions the Democrat Party main stream. What is that anyway? Free abortions on demand, more gun control, more censorship, more gender reassignments, more law fare, price control, more appointments based on skin color and gender instead of merit, higher taxes, more undocumented residents sucking up our resources? Anyone would be a fool to vote for that agenda. Sanmateo111 seems to forget that RFK Jr wanted to be on de Democrat Party ticket but was rejected because he could sluice votes away from Biden. He was excluded from day one. There was no debate, no primary, just an appointment by the corrupt Democrat Party. Democratic values, anyone?
The Democratic value is freedom. As free to control your own body as to carry a gun. Lower tax burden for the working class with the uber-wealthy paying at least a tiny bit more taxes than the nothing they do as a result of the Trump tax cuts. Less censorship--Republican has become the party of book banning and trashing journalists. Interesting how you suddenly care about democratic values when criticizing the Democratic Party nomination process, but not when it comes to reforming the Electoral College or supporting the right of all citizens to vote.
Westy - as usual you are wrong on every front. The abortion issue was returned to each State, so lucky for you, you can have all of the abortions you desire in California. The Trump tax cut benefited the middle and lower class the most. A previous writer had the stats on that fact. The very rich already pay 40% of all income taxes. Some responsible Republicans are concerned about some inappropriate books made available to underaged children and have called some individuals on their questionable credentials as journalists. The EC is a completely different topic which would require a Constitutional Amendment and yes, I am firm in believing that voting should be restricted to proven citizenship. Even today, Zuckerberg admitted requested censorship by the WH during the Covid19 era. The nomination of Harris is an abomination, a stellar abuse of our democratic process, and you know it. Please have the courage, even once, to admit that not all is rosy on your side of the isle.
"Less censorship--Republican has become the party of book banning and trashing journalists"? Where have books been actually banned? If someone has moved any books to locked storage denying access to all or worse... destroyed books... I oppose such actions. But let's move away from the righteous right objecting to books "just because" and the other extreme supporting stocking school library shelves with graphic and age-inappropriate publications.
Setting aside some books that parents feel are age-inappropriate is not banning them. However, if a parent thinks there should be no limitations on what books their children should have, they can obtain those materials... they may have been removed from a school library, but they're not "banned." And lest we forget... there are woke activists who want to restrict access to classic literature. Again, let's move away from the extremes.
Ah... trashing journalists. Are we talking about the same journalists who failed to report the cognitive decline of Joe Biden when it was happening? A free press needs to be... free. It should not be biased. We have seen far too much bias in reporting over that past decade. When it comes to censorship, it appears the Democratic Party has turned this democratic freedom on its ear in a way that nothing is reaching that ear. We can disagree about RFK Jr.'s claims that he was censored by the Biden-Harris administration... but check out what Mark Zuckerberg said yesterday about being pressured to censor Americans on Facebook.
Well said, Mr. van Ulden. I get the feeling that Westy, Jorg, sanmateo111, Rel, and Taffy are still preoccupied with waiting for Beyonce and so they’ve copy/pasted their usual throwaway responses attempting to distract from Hidin’ Harris and Stolen Valor A-Walz and their continuation of America Last policies.
I wonder whether any of these lefties and sudden Harris supporters "Jorg, Rel, Taffy, Mike etc.." took the time to listen to RFK Jr's reason for leaving the Democrat Party. As an insider, he certainly brought some ugly points to the surface. He is a victim of the corruption, intimidation and outright law fare of a political clan that has long forgotten what their mission should be. Now that is ugly, and we should all uniformly despise the leaders of that party.
As a kid in the Netherlands I recall us calling the typical American tourist, the ugly American. They were already wearing ugly shorts and shirts, had a camera strung around their necks and their spouses were mostly loudmouth entitled types. Fortunately, once I had immigrated, I discovered soon that stereotyping Americans, or anyone else for that matter, was inappropriate and ignorant.
Have you even tried to listen to RFK Jr., Dirk? Found anything that makes sense? Ever wondered why the rest of the Kennedy’s have disowned him, as a disgrace to their name?
I have listened to RFK Jr. quite a bit. He is controversial and I don't agree with everything he stands for. However, his discussion about his reason for leaving the Democrat Party is profound. Why should he care about the rest of the family. Does your family agree with everything you hold dear? That's the same bunch that looked the other way for years after his uncle let his campaign worker drown. Now he is a disgrace? They are the despicable ones that will not allow divergent views? Another example of the Democrats warning that Trump will destroy democracy, while they are doing it themselves. Listen carefully to what RFK Jr said and you may skip over his endorsement of Trump.
Jorg, the only reason you don't support RFK is because he left the democrat party. You should listen, as Dirk noted, as to why he left, it's revealing. If RFK had endorsed Cackling Kamala you would have been doing the Scandinavian folk jig and putting on your Sverigedräkten with your wife and kiddies. You're as predictable as a metronome. BTW Tulsi Gabbard changed teams today as well, for the same reason. The Democrat party is corrupt!
RFK Jr first went to Kamala for support, he was categorically rejected. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/08/14/rfk-jr-kamala-harris-cabinet-trump/
Hit enter too soon ... to finish my thought, his crazy views never aligned with mainstream Democrats, so it's not a recent change because he joined team Trump. I am not center left; I am center center.
The term "Ugly American" also referred to some Americans (i.e. the CIA) neo-colonial habit of interfering in the internal affairs of many non-white countries through coups, assassinations, engineered color revolutions and civil wars, financing opposition groups and parties, economic sabotage, etc.. All of these things are still taking place in 2024. For example, although not generally reported in corporate media, recent examples are American interventions in Venezuela, Georgia, Malaysia, Thailand. You will find no greater a supporter of such racist behavior than the neocon war monger Joe Biden, who recently let slip that "I am president of the world." While Trump certainly was going along with such policies to a large extent, he was somewhat more likely than the rest of the uni-party to push back on the neocon agenda. So calling Trump an ugly American may be true, it definitely applies to Joe Biden and his administration, despite liberal camouflaging.
Here we go again…blah, blah, blah, orange man bad. Speaking of ugly, Mr. Arum, it’s not surprising you cherry pick editorials supporting your flawed position. We can easily pick editorials blowing up your editorials and your assertions. I’d say your LTE falls into three categories: false, obscure, AND lunatic. I’m not even talking about grotesque hyperbolic assertions or baffling verbal manufactures. It’s interesting you try to focus on unknowns in the future when you can’t face the recent past or the present damage caused by treasonous Biden/Harris and their America Last policies. I’d say that what are worse than ugly Americans are uglier people who attempt to define what they consider ugly Americans based on, as Mr. van Ulden has generously described, out of context WSJ editorials. Which one are you, Mr. Arum? I think our dear readers have a pretty good idea when you consider Not So Common’s facts you’ve willfully ignored. As for your cheerleader Taffy, we already know where Taffy lies. And Taffy is known for lying. A lot.
Yes, I posted a light-hearted comment, but the underlying message was more serious... do we really need "ugly" commentary? What purpose does it serve? Would it not be better to focus on positions instead of personalities?
I did not catch RFK Jr.'s speech live, but I did read an AP (not a conservative news outlet) article about his remarks. It said that RFK Jr. opposes the Democratic Party's assault on the First Amendment, the war in Ukraine, and what he characterizes as the left's "war on our children."
IMO talk of "ugly" Americans is just a distraction from the Democratic Party's candidate's lack of clear policies... unless you like leftist price controls... as well as that same candidate dodging the press... plus her running mate's radicalism.
I think your mistaken about RFK Jr. Yes, perhaps some in his family are disappointed in his politics, but do you think they love him any less? You stated that the rest of the Kennedy family disowned him. The "rest" of the entire family? Really, Jorg? Who, with the authority of speaking for the Kennedy family, has publicly declared RFK Jr. a disgrace to the family's name?
Doctor Strange Doolittle - It would be nice if you are going to write an LTE that you would provide real life examples and facts, not just the same rhetoric we read everyday when Jorg, Rel, Taffy, Mike etc.. chime in. Facts go a long way towards proving or swaying opinion, but spewing what swirls in your head will not sway true Americans. Had you said, Trump got us into two wars, he worked with his political allies to create a false Russian narrative about Barrack Obama, or that Trump accepted $27 million from China and Ukraine that was funneled through his sons, or that inflation went through the roof during his administration, or that Trump fell down the steps of Air Force One 18 different times, or that Trump is staying inside the White House waiting to see if Punxsutawney Phil would show up with his ice cream, or or or.... let's get some facts Doctor.
So, Doctor Not So Common who hides behind a nom de plumme, allow us to share some facts as requested. Fact: Trump has been convicted in a court of law by his peers of 34 felonies. Fact: Trump has been convicted of sexual assault on E. Jean Carroll and has been required to pay $85M in fines. Fact: Trump has refused to cede the 2020 election in which he lost. Fact: Trump has been tracked for his lies while he was in office and told an estimated 30K in untruths. Fact: Trump's University was convicted of fraud and has been disbanded and has had to pay $25M in fines. Space does not allow for more facts, but suffice it to say Trump would not qualify for most governmental jobs based on his resume. Why then should we entrust him with the highest job in the land?
Using democrats to fact checking is not fact checking. It was your corrupt Biden and Obama government that has harassed Donald Trump since 2016. All charges against Trump were drummed up, and New York found 12 Democrat biased Jorge’s snd filled the jury. No unbiased individual would have convicted Trump of any of the charges. All charges will eventually be thrown out, and then what will you say? You’ll probably say that we need to throw the five or six Supreme Court justices who adhere to and apply the constitution should be thrown off the court. Trump may have had a sexual discretion, but the fact it was brought up over 20 years after it may have occurred his garbage and unreasonable. The woman couldn’t remember the facts herself, and she wasn’t even certain what year it occurred. Again, no unbiased jury would have found Trump guilty. What does not conceding the 2020 election have to do with anything because there was obviously voter frau. What about John Kerry, Al Gore and Hilda-beast Clinton, who all questioned the elections that they were in? What about Nancy Pelosi saying that if Clinton lost, she should never concede? It’s pretty clear to most people, that there were shenanigans for the 2020 election, it’s the same reason that Joe has imported 12 million illegal immigrants so they can vote. Just this weekend, a state found numerous illegal immigrants who had registered to vote, they also cleared the register of individuals who should not have been registered. You only focus on certain parts of stories and ignore the exculpatory evidence. If you were a prosecutor, you would be disbarred, from hiding & ignoring, evidence. Why do you ignore the indiscretions from your own saviors, Joe Biden, and Barack Obama? It’s time for you to come clean, and gain back an ounce of credibility.
Doctor NSC, no amount of "alternative facts", equivocation, and deflection are going to change the outcomes of the factual items presented. The fact is Trump has a history of breaking the law well before Obama and Biden. He broke the law with the rental discrimination. He used the law to bilk his contractors. Trump University was committing fraud well before his presidency. I am not a prosecutor but I don't need to be. All of Trump's crimes are well in the public domain.
Dr. Arum - thank you for highlighting out of context WSJ editorials. Let's see, we have had many administrations, and certainly including the current one, that populate professional planners who have, nonetheless, made a mess of our economy, the world peace and have made life generally unaffordable for many Americans. I'll take an outsider who does not conform with your understanding of a leader anytime. And what the so-called allies are concerned, they don't give a darn about us and are just in it for our protection of their welfare states. You need to clean up your gross generalization of what an Ugly American is. You are clueless.
The most disappointing part of your observation is that the political party you mentioned, the Republican Party, does not have truth or facts in their lexicon. As the saying goes, you are preaching to the choir. The majority knows that Trump is an unhinged petulant child.

Good morning, Jorg
In the American South, there's oft repeated phrase... "Don't be ugly!" You might want to try it.
Bless your heart...
Ray I like the phrase, "you can't fix stupid" and you may have spurred a new phase "you can't fix ugly."
Coming from you, Ray, I know how seriously I should take it!
