At the end of World War II, the dimensions of the surplus that rested in America’s hands were staggering. We stood at the summit of the world. America commanded fully half of the entire planet’s manufacturing capacity and generated more than half of the world’s electricity. America owned two-thirds of the world’s gold stocks and one-half of all the monetary reserves. The United States produced two times more petroleum than the rest of the world combined, it had the world’s largest merchant fleet, a near monopoly on the emerging growth industries of aerospace and electronics, and for a short time at least, an absolute monopoly on the new technology of atomic power. At the war’s end, unemployment was negligible.
What’s happened since? The United States would be an oil power if only we would drill for it. The United States is sitting on massive oil reserves. Why aren’t we pumping it? Our Congress is responsible for artificially increasing oil prices. Our oil sits untapped. Beneath our deserts, our forests, our swamps and our oceans. The nation’s undiscovered oil resources total about 139 billion barrels on land and offshore.
It is our politicians, the ones we elect and re-elected, who have not allowed our oil to be drilled and sold to us. Congress and the President retain a federal order that forbid most off-shore drilling. You elected Congress — it paid you back with $4.00 plus per gallon gas. How/why did our self-reliant post war status turn to be beholden to foreign countries?
