Editor,

I see the good sense of “daylighting” on the oncoming-traffic side of midblock crosswalks and other crossings where there is no traffic control (“New parking law benefits pedestrians” Nov. 30-Dec.1 Daily Journal), but can anyone give a rational reason why there needs to be daylighting on the far side of any crosswalk, or at places where there is pedestrian-friendly traffic control?  Parking is a real problem that significantly adds to traffic, especially during busy periods, as weary drivers circle block after block in search of parking spaces.

This has nothing to do with hating on cars. We all love our cars. The question is how addicted some of us are to that convenience and how much some always blame the government for their own personal problems. The car-socialism needs to stop.

1. Parking isn't a governmental transportation problem. In America it's a problem to be solved by each individuum (if you don't have parking at the place where you live, don't live there or get rid of the second, third or fourth car) or each business (parking minimums are defined in the municipal code). This system is so flawed that for every car there are 4 empty parking spots somewhere, people are just too lazy to walk a block or two.

If the government is supposed to fix this very personal issue, only that particular user or customer should pay for usage - not all of society.

2. In every single car collision the driver pretends they couldn't see this or that and parked cars are often blamed for the crash. Daylighting takes away that excuse, because people never take responsibility themselves.
