My neighbors, friends and I would like to see the city of Belmont build a community swimming pool at the Barrett Community Center. Not long ago and prior to its move, Belmont residents had access to a popular year-round community swimming pool and family activity center at the Jewish Community Center.
Today, claims that Carlmont High School’s swimming pool fills that void are only partially true. Carlmont’s swimming pool is available to the public for lap and recreational swimming mid-June to Aug. 2, Monday through Friday from noon to 3 p.m. This schedule effectively eliminates the ability of working adults to utilize the facility. In addition to Carlmont’s pool not being open all year-round, it is not family-oriented and has neither a children’s swim area or recreational deck.
As a working parent, swimmer and Belmont resident, my daughter and I are forced to swim laps elsewhere, namely the Highland Recreation Center in San Mateo or the College of San Mateo.Â
Learning how to swim is an essential survival skill, especially here in the Bay Area where we are surrounded by many water-related recreational opportunities.Â
I for one would like to see the Barrett Community Center revitalization project include a swimming pool as part of its renovation and truly become a community center that can be enjoyed by all.Â
