Friday the thirteenth saw the Daily Journal with two similar opinion pieces. One by Jon Mays on personal, local and state governmental debt, quite good. The other was a op-ed from the Orange County Register that explained that federal debt and annual deficits are unsustainable.
Although true, the article totally omits the elephant in the room of out of control military spending. It also “forgets” the recent Republican “tax scam” that cut taxes enormously with no compensating cuts in expenditures. An amazing oversight, yet it only suggests that we need to look at Social Security and Medicare as well as debt repayment to start to get things under control. Who writes this stuff?
A short while back, under President Clinton, the government was in a near balance as far as the annual deficit was concerned. Of course the total debt outstanding was still huge, but at least we were in a position to begin making headway in reducing that as well.
Then President Bush and his wars allowed unbridled expenditures with no effort to sell “war bonds” or make any other sacrifice in order to pay for the hundreds of billions he printed. That was to pay for what 15 Saudis and a few others did when they bought some one way airline tickets, got some box cutters on sale at Costco as well as some flight lessons, and here we are.
Somehow the Register ignores all this. What a great paper they must be. I’ll stick with my Daily Journal, thank you.
