Regarding Joe Guttenbeil’s letter Dec. 10, I don’t care about Newsom’s fancy dinner; homelessness isn’t Newsom’s fault, it’s Reagan’s closure of the mental hospitals without the community-based mental health help he promised would take their place; and high-speed rail, meh.
But I agree about Newsom’s smugness.
He’s been fixated on running for president since he was mayor of San Francisco, and his greatest and most damaging sin is that he is willing to sell our Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and a healthy San Francisco Bay to BIG AG for a huge amount of money for his presidential campaign, money giving them the water they want via tunnel for growing crops in the desert of the southern San Joaquin Valley where no crops should be grown.
Our Delta, the largest on the entire Pacific Coast, is already failing; species of fish have gone extinct, and the salmon industry has had to shut down again this year.
If the Delta fails because of illegal and legal unchecked pumping and climate change-caused drought, there will no longer be enough water from the Sierra Nevada for Delta water for the Delta crops, cities and tribal people, and to help flush out our San Francisco Bay with Delta water and tidal action.
We will have a Bay full of algal blooms. Science has said Newsom is wrong; the courts have backed up what science has said. Newsom is determined to be president.
