I commend Foster City for prioritizing pedestrian and student safety (March 10 Daily Journal “Foster City is prioritizing red curbing around schools”). With the state’s Daylighting Law now enforceable, many municipalities in our county are opting to continue to educate the public about the law (which cities were supposed to be doing in 2024) rather than cite violators who park within 20 feet of a crosswalk.
This law improves visibility for both pedestrians and drivers. Instead of mere education, Foster City is setting a commendable example by red curbing intersections within designated Safe Routes to School this year to protect some of our most vulnerable pedestrians.
I hope other cities in the county will follow Foster City’s lead and implement similar red curbing around student routes to school.
