I strongly support the county’s proposed ballot measure to authorize lower-income housing. Contrary to the misinformation quoted in SMDJ article “Half Moon Bay is opposed to countywide Article 34 ballot measure,” the county’s ballot measure would strengthen local control over housing.
The county’s ballot measure would empower cities to invest in low-income housing options directly. Currently, cities need to make housing investments through local nonprofits or other indirect methods. By authorizing local agencies to invest in affordable homes, the ballot measure would allow cities to control every aspect of affordable housing preservation or development.
Furthermore, cities would still have absolute control over local zoning and entitlement processes. The county and other agencies wouldn’t be able to build any new housing without approval of the duly elected city council.
Let’s restore local control over affordable housing by supporting the county’s ballot measure.
So if I understand your LTE, Ms. Baird, local control occurs AFTER the county has saddled the city with at least one low-income housing project. The city and their voters don’t get to choose whether they want the project or not – that decision was out of their hands. And that’s the problem. Let’s restore local control over affordable housing by allowing cities to determine whether they want a low-income housing project. Vote NO on the measure. Don’t worry, if you change your mind, there will be plenty of chances as the county will likely bring up this measure again, the same or in some other configuration in another attempt to fool voters.
