You know, just the other day I was in the market to buy some chocolates for my mother-in-law for an Easter gift, so I went to my favorite store, See's Candies. Upon arriving at the store I was greeted by a man who was passing out leaflets about See's Candies. The leaflet said that See's Candies is using contractors that employ workers who are not paid the wages and benefits that prevail in our community for electrical work, and that this practice hurts all workers and drives down the standard of living in our community.
I asked the man what was the difference in wages and benefits. He said they undercut the wage package by about 40 to 50 percent. He also said that the contractor is from Fremont and does not have any employees from San Mateo County.
I was upset when I heard this so I decided to call See's in South San Francisco to see if it was true. See's said they are building a large production facility in Daly City and moving their operations there. They said it was purely a cost decision not to go with a local contractor who pays the wages that prevail in our community. I told See's it was a cost decision for me also this Easter and that I was going to buy See's Candies because it was costing local jobs and driving down ours standard of living. Their corporate motto is "QUALITY without COMPROMISE." How ironic. Sees', you just "COMPROMISED" the "QUALITY" of life in our community.
