As Steven Howard has discussed in his recent letter, he is concerned that we don’t “go low” much as the Texas legislature has done. He feels that keeping the nonpartisan redistricting process we and other more forward-looking states have adopted, are most in keeping with the spirit of our democratic seeking culture. All true enough.
The big “but” is that, as U.S. Rep. Sam Liccardo mentioned, “don’t bring a knife to a gun fight.” Yes we are in a fight. The creeping fascism that we now face in Trump Two, compliments of Project 2025 by the Heritage Foundation, seems hell-bent on treating us to what Italy had to contend with 100 years ago. That being the rise of the authoritarian state much on the model of Mussolini’s Italy. The new and sadly different Republican party of today has adopted similar tactics. Change the law when it suits you and consolidate power in any way possible. That’s the heritage of the “Heritage Foundation.” Not our 240-year-old experiment in representative democracy and a written constitution, but a throwback to the more common authoritarian rule by despots.
What to do? The effort by Democrats to temporarily go back to the old ways of allowing parties pick their voters is unfortunately the only way out to fight the Trump administration’s power grab. We are left with no other practical alternative. Sad but true.

Hey Mr. Caggiano, methinks you’re a bit late to the party…the bat signal to irrationally rationalize redistricting came out a week ago. I see you’re trying to take a different, yet still unhinged and illogical, approach to justify wannabe dictator Newsom’s actions. Now that Newsom is attempting to override the will of the people, we can only hope other states do the same. I believe Missouri may be redistricting. Meanwhile, let’s give credit to the Trump administration in attempting to prevent voter fraud by kicking off ineligible voters from voter rolls. BTW, how about Israel planning on taking over Gaza and relocating residents to South Sudan?
Thanks for spicing things up with a Mussolini reference instead of the tired overused HItler comparisons. Chat GPT could give you a list of fascist dictators through history for your next letter.
