A fight broke out between about 30 incarcerated individuals at the Maguire Correctional Facility at around 10:45 a.m. Friday, according to a San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.
At least one inmate was transferred to the hospital, and multiple were treated for pepper spray, according to an on-site first responder. The amount of individuals involved was not confirmed.
As of noon, the situation was under control and the facility was secure. There was no threat to public safety, Communications Officer Gretchen Spiker said.
Four sheriff’s deputies received minor injuries and six inmates were transported to hospitals for treatment, with all in stable condition and three returning to the facility.
“I'm grateful to the Sheriff's Office personnel who acted swiftly to stop the fight and ensure the safety of the correctional facility and everyone inside of the facility,” Sheriff Christina Corpus said in a press release. “Their actions undoubtedly prevented more serious injuries and ensured the situation was quickly under control.”
There will be an investigation into the circumstances around the fight and the case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for review and determination of charges against those involved if warranted, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The San Mateo County Organization of Sheriff’s Sergeants issued a response Friday saying that it sounded the alarm weeks ago about chronic understaffing, that it was unsafe for both staff and the inmate population. The OSS said it warned that the sheriff’s decision to reduce staffing would endanger lives, but that those concerns were dismissed.
“Despite today's incident at Maguire Correctional Facility, our line staff once again demonstrated their professionalism and commitment by working to protect the safety and security of the jail, staff, and inmates,” it said in a statement. “The OSS urges immediate and meaningful action to ensure safe conditions for all who live and work inside San Mateo County's jails.”
