Successful organizations, be they corporations or sports teams, sometimes achieve greatness through careful planning, establishing clear objectives and assembling team members who possess individual talent and the ability to make the efforts of co-workers more successful.
A team of very good players in the sports world, playing very well together can outperform a team that has a few individual stars but lacks coordination of effort. The highly successful teams enjoy the distinction of “the whole being greater than the sum of the parts.” This example from the world of sport is why highly successful coaches are popular speakers at business conferences. Business leaders want to learn how highly successful teams are developed and how highly successful coaches continue their success year after year.
American society is in the throes of an interesting example of The Sum of the Parts; however, instead of the various political units being composed by administrative units that reinforce one another to create a greater whole, the administrative units are reinforcing a race to the bottom. The current sum of the parts of the U.S. government is resulting in the deterioration of our society. The president and his Justice Department ignores the rule of law. It acts against prudent scientific advice, cancels social programs designed to provide basic assistance, ignores international commitments, disrupts world trade and domestic economics and provides daily examples of bullying, racism and unprofessional behavior. A staff of sycophantic incompetents are in place because of their loyalty to the president not because of their expertise.
Staff charged with being disloyal to the president’s agenda are fired. The president of the United Sates is leading the charge to the bottom and each incompetent member of his administration is reinforcing the decline. The Sum of the Parts is now far worse than the total of the individual parts and that is a disaster in the making for our country and the democratic world.

Yawn, snore… Thanks for your letter, Mr. Dilley, and your Democrat talking points. Your faux outrage in an obvious partisan TDS-fueled rant is noted and immediately dismissed. In regards to your The Sum of the Parts theory, I’d like to know if all Democrats (including you) will continue to support criminals and terrorists over American citizens. Fortunately, we’re seeing common-sense Democrats acting as individuals who love America more than they hate our (yes, our) great President Trump. The Sum of the Parts Democrats is now far worse than the total of the individual parts and that is a disaster in the making for our country and the democratic world. Good luck to individual Democrats who are willing to remove themselves from your version of The Sum of the Parts. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Gary is one of these pseudo-intellectuals who saw nothing wrong in the past four years. Hey, Gary, for all of the examples that you state, has it occurred to you that Biden had the least qualified cabinet ever, which comprised individuals chosen strictly for their skin color, sexual orientation and your well-stated sycophantic qualities. The media never reported on any internal disastrous decisions that were made which have come to haunt us. From the press secretary on up, everyone was a confirmed amateur which is now grudgingly being acknowledged by the very same sleazy yes-men and women in the media. Sorry Bro, suffer for another 3 years under a real presidency.
