As a long time resident of South San Francisco, more than 80 years, I greatly resent Bill Silverfarb's column of July 29, entitled "Take down South City sign." In the first place research should have been done before writing about the sign. The sign is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of July 1996, and on the California Register of Historical Resources in July 1996. If Silverfarb had researched the sign, he would have understood the significance of this feat of engineering in 1928.
I am proud of my heritage and very thankful for all the hard work, and do mean hard work, people did to make this a wonderful city in which to be raised.
My father started a business in 1920 and successfully raised a family of four - three college graduates - two cum laude. When we were growing up, South San Francisco was like one big happy family, which had about 3,500 to 4,000 residents, of all ethnic groups, having fun together.
An interesting fact Silverfarb might like to know is that airline pilots used "Our Sign" as a land mark in the 1940s and 1950s to pinpoint their location. This was long before the sophisticated instruments in airplanes now.

We are very thankful that one of our late residents, Edna Harks, worked so hard and diligently to get "Our Sign" designated historical. It was a labor of love. We are so proud of her and very thankful for her dedication to this cause.
