More power to Broadway in Burlingame and efforts elsewhere to save stations from Caltrain's budget-cutters. Higher gas prices alone are reason to keep transit within handy reach of more riders, not fewer. To deal with its funding deficit, Caltrain could instead:
· Be more aggressive in recruiting riders. Case in point: Broadway has heavy on-off traffic via U.S. 101, much of it generated by an industrial park. Go door-to-door to divert traffic onto trains. Offer free tickets - the county did so for BART. Propose a shuttle link.
· Defer costly rail refinements during the deficit crunch. Grade separations make no sense if trains can't run, a prospect Caltrain has raised if budget funds aren't found.
· Add a modest surcharge to Baby Bullet fares. It's unfair to charge the same for fast, premium trains as for older, slower, noisier runs.
· Make Broadway, in place of Millbrae, a stop for at least one southbound Bullet. For its size, Millbrae is overly rail - endowed. Broadway Burlingame's ridership boost should more than offset minimal inconvenience for southbound BART and SFO transferees at Millbrae.
