As a local resident, I am pleased with Bridgepointe Shopping Center’s revitalization, including Nazareth Ice Oasis rink’s reopening. Other ice sport facilities bring more than 20 percent revenue increases to surrounding businesses; no doubt this will help reinvigorate Bridgepointe.
My daughter loves skating; I truly appreciate the years community members invested in reopening the rink. Casual skaters, figure skaters, families, hockey players, curlers and beyond worked hard to demonstrate the rink’s need; now it’s evident that Ice Oasis is in high demand. While they are scheduling time for certain ice sports, there is still massive demand for ice time. What to do? The natural answer is that a rink should be opened elsewhere to accommodate this pent-up demand.
Soon, the city of Belmont will finish its General Plan and Belmont Village Specific Plan, setting the city in motion for decades to come. How better to serve recreational needs of our community and region than ensuring a rink also reopen in Belmont? While this would not require a zoning change, an ice facility could be a condition of approval for new development at the Iceland property. Alternatively, the city could require a rink on the lot, but not exclude additional development. For example, they could have a restaurant, and condos above the facility. There are so many ways to make this happen. Our region will continue growing as will the desire for family recreation. Reopening a rink in Belmont would be a gift to generations of folks living in and around the area.
