Editor,

Susanne Thiel’s letter is titled “No one has right to commit genocide,” but is confused thinking it is by Israel when it actually is by Hamas. Genocide is defined as intentional and organized destruction of a group. Israel had tried to displace Palestinians and warn them of pending strikes, but Hamas has wanted the Palestinians to remain as human shields. And Hamas built its military tunnels underneath civilian apartments, hospitals and schools. Israel’s killing of civilians is accidental and regretted, so it is not genocide. However, the Hamas massacre and kidnapping in Israel on Oct. 7 was intentional and organized, and the Charter of Hamas calls for the destruction of Israel, which is genocide by Hamas.

Hello, Norman

I think everyone could learn a lot if a truly independent and unbiased person or group could evaluate this question of genocide. Such an evaluation would absolutely determine that the IDF has regrettably killed civilians when provoked by Hamas... especially Hamas operatives who shield themselves with civilians. However, those tragic deaths are not part of any campaign to eradicate all Palestinians. That being said, I don't think too many people would disagree with Hamas' belief that Israel should be wiped off the face of the map, and that would require the eradication of all Israelis.

Thanks for your letter, Mr. Licht. It’s amazing the number of people, especially contributors to the Daily Journal, who conveniently excuse Hamas’ massacre and kidnapping of Israelis. As such, we know to not consider seriously anything they write. If these folks are willing to excuse Hamas’ murderous actions and mayhem, why wouldn’t they excuse Israel’s response? Asked multiple times and still no answers.
