Editor,

We have the families of the Israeli hostages demanding the cease-fire and hostage transfers happen immediately, and yet, new settlements are announced by the current government. What it really means is that there are critics of Israel’s war on Gaza including ex-Prime Minister Ehud Barak and numerous other high-profile Israeli officials demanding one thing, but those presently in charge are about continued occupation and displacement of more Palestinians on the other.

Unfortunately, Mr. Caggiano, it takes two to tango and Hamas/Gazans aren’t willing to dance. If it helps, perhaps you can consider the attacks on Hamas and Gaza to be surprise attacks, similar to what Hamas did to Israel. It sounds like you’ve given a pass to Hamas for their initial massacre so perhaps you can apply the same logic to Israel. There is only one path to a more peaceful future for the area – Hamas needs to release all hostages and surrender unconditionally. Until then, Hamas/Gazans have made and are continue to make their bed so they can lie in it.

The trash bin of history is full of countries that couldn't or wouldn't defend themselves. Isreal did not choose war over peace - Iran's proxy Hamas did. The West Bank was captured by Isreal when Jordon launched a surprise attack on Isreal in the Six-Day War over 57 years ago. Isreal fought back and kept their land then as they must again or perish.

We, as a country, have supported genocide too many times in the past. Not just ignored it, actively supported it. As we are currently doing with the horrors being visited on the people of Gaza. Israel would not be able to do this without the active support of the US. Medical and aid workers have been killed by the hundreds, or imprisoned. Civilian areas are being bombed. Children are starving. And now there is a spread of polio. War begets war. The current horrors are creating more terrorists for the future as we speak.
