I am writing in response to the recent letter from Dilip Amin who discussed the attacks on Hindu temples that have taken place in the Bay Area over the past couple of months. He also detailed attacks on individuals, the Indian Embassy and two statues of Mahatma Gandhi. These hate crimes cannot be tolerated and go against everything that we in the Bay Area should stand for.
I am the president of a group called the Peninsula Multifaith Coalition.
This coalition consists of membership from 30 different faith houses here on the Peninsula, representing all the major religions.
We work together, we serve together, we honor and respect one another. Dilip is an important member of this coalition, as is the entire Hindu community. As people of different faiths work together, we learn that our common human experience and values are universal across faiths.
What we have in common as members of the human family is so much greater than any differences in how we express that faith. We stand firmly in support of all the various faiths that enrich the Bay Area. I call upon all members of our community to love and welcome the adherents of all the various faiths that add to the rich tapestry of life that we enjoy here on the Peninsula.
Thank you, Rick and the Peninsula Multifaith Coalition, for your thoughtful message. It carries significant meaning for the Hindu community. I've been involved with PMC for nearly a decade and have always admired the incredible work being done there. Recently, I had the opportunity to make a presentation, which I believe provides a comprehensive perspective. You can view it here: https://youtu.be/l3mO3XsJdtQ .
Having lived in America for five decades, I am troubled by the recent increase in incidents affecting Hindus. It's a concerning trend that warrants attention. Let's remain hopeful that these incidents are isolated and not indicative of a larger issue. Every individual should have the freedom to practice their faith without fear of prejudice or discrimination.
