Editor,

Jim Remington’s Dec. 29 letter “High-density housing” once again hit the nail on the head. The next time you go out, ask a half dozen people who live in San Mateo what they think of all the development. I guarantee the answer will be enough is enough.

Robert: I live in the Parkside area of San Mateo. The worst traffic congestion I face involves commuters who live on the east side of the bay who drive across the bridge on Hwy 92 to work on the Peninsula. Between 3pm-6:30pm it takes a while to get to the Fashion Island offramp on Hwy 101 because the freeway is backed up by cars waiting to get onto Hwy 92 going east to the bridge. The same is true if I take 92 east in order to get off at the Deleware St. exit. This is the worst traffic in San Mateo, and it is caused by a severe shortage of housing on this side of the bay. The perfect place to put new housing is under-utilized land such as strip malls with big parking lots close to a Caltrain station. That perfectly describes the Concar shopping center. Let's build it.

If you don't want more housing, you should first oppose the construction of any more office buildings. People work in those buildings and they have to live somewhere. Why should they have to drive from as far away as Tracy?

At the October 2017 joint meeting of our Planning Commission and City Council, it was expressed continuously that they want to hear from residents to know what they wish for the future of San Mateo. I got the impression from one or two of those city folks, who support Plan Bay Area-style growth, that what they really meant was they want to hear from those other than the folks who want it all to stop. Because those voices have been raised loudly. Just dunno if they are getting the weight and representation they deserve. We'll have to see if labor union voices are louder.
