Many of us who voted for Christina Corpus for sheriff are experiencing voters’ remorse. Who could have imagined Corpus would jeopardize the integrity of the department she was elected to, defying both the letter and the spirit of her role as sheriff?
The San Mateo Daily Journal that endorsed her in 2022, subsequently called for her resignation amid myriad of complaints against her, including the sheriff’s apparent retaliation against anyone who criticized her. Among other signs of her poor leadership: under her watch, five prisoners died in jail of drugs and suicides that very likely could have been prevented, and a female prisoner was attacked by a male prisoner. In fact, many of her own deputies and captains have cast “no confidence” votes against her.
The ultimate instance of her poor judgment, however, is that she failed to step down after her staff’s morale cratered, her department essentially fell apart, half a dozen cities in the county gave her votes of no confidence, and the supervisors were compelled to intervene, requesting an unbiased investigation from the well-respected retired judge LaDoris Cordell. Judge Cordell’s conclusion: Corpus should resign immediately.
Since Corpus stubbornly refuses to do so, the San Mateo County Supervisors have called for a special election to give them the temporary authority to remove this wayward and incompetent sheriff. To oust her and restore order to the top law enforcement agency in our county, vote yes on Measure A.
Thank you for a great letter. I was one of the Council members (San Carlos) who voted in favor of a vote of no confidence and request that she resign. It passed 5-0
