Chocolate milk. To hear the name angers most people, but lots of people at our school know it as that cool, refreshing, chocolatey elixir that kids need. Why? It relaxes muscles, has 16 percent of daily needed protein, because if you took away chocolate milk, kids would boycott it and not get the nutrients they need and, most of all, it is delicious and nutritious.
According to chef Jamie Oliver, who filled a school bus with sand to represent the amount of sugar kids in the Los Angeles Unified School District are getting, “The sugar keeps comin’ and it ain’t stoppin’,” why don’t we stop a minute and think? For one kid that is definitely way too much. For two? Still a lot. But the school district has 734,631 students. For 734,631 students, is a school bus of sugar too much? In fact, at our school, plain milk has 10 more calories than chocolate milk, yet people call it unhealthy.
Sure you can get nutrition from food. That’s something I agree with. But what would you rather have: the bare minimum of nutrition, or some added protein with a tiny bit of added sugar? Chocolate milk has the same nine nutrients as plain milk. And it tastes better.
Ergo, I conclude chocolate milk is healthy, and it is superior to all drinks, not just because it tastes good. It is practically the same as white milk.
