Editor,
After it spent our property tax money on facilities not even hinted at in its prior bond, Measure H, I was surprised that the San Mateo Community College District would have the chutzpah to consider another bond.

We’re still paying the prior bond, so the district evidently has no problem if we’re paying on multiple bonds at the same time. My property tax bill shows I’m paying $128 each year for Measure H, where the funded projects were not disclosed whatsoever in the ballot measure. The voters would be less likely to fund private gym memberships and parking lots that were funded.
Likewise, student housing is a poor use of tax monies for community colleges. Was the football coach on the student housing advisory panel because housing would be an inducement for recruiting? In 2024, state voters OK’d $1.2 billion in Proposition 2 monies for community colleges. How much of that did SMCCCD receive? Did it even apply?
Bonds are expensive borrowing, with interest doubling the total cost. So if the SMCCCD puts a $818 million bond on the ballot, be prepared to pay about $1.6 billion.
This time, will our college district promise to fund only projects disclosed to voters in its ballot argument?
