Since the beginning of the pandemic, approximately 3,800 Asian hate incidents have been reported in the United States. These incidents include physical assault, civil rights violations, verbal harassment, shunning, and online harassment. of these incidents, 67% were reported by Asian women — more than twice that of Asian men.

According to Stop AAPI Hate, the number of self-reported incidents represents a “fraction of hate incidents that actually occur.” There are approximately 12.7 million Asian women in the United States, representing almost 4% of the population. Out of the 12.7 million Asian women in our country, if only 2,546 Asian women reported these incidents, then only 0.02% of them were able to ask for help.

While most of us are emphatic with the plight that she so well articulates, I am personally floored by the lack of sympathy for the other communities in the Bay Area in which murder has become so prevalent that it is barely mentioned. For her and the other Asian women, the verbal assaults and other harassments have fortunately not resulted, relatively speaking, in a plethora of fatalities. Today I read in the SF Chronicle that Oakland has already seen 38 murders this year. Where is the outrage? Where is the hastened trip by our fuzzy President to comfort the families of those victims? Where are the demonstrations against that inexcusable violence?

You wrote that "This myth also ignores the fact that Asians are not one monolithic group. Lumping together, for example, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Korean, Filipino, Vietnamese, Thai, or Indonesian people diminishes each subpopulation’s culture and language.

That is what happens with use of "white," "Anglo" or "European" to describe "culture and language." Some wit said we call English the mother tongue because our ancestors spoke Polish, Yiddish, Italian, etc.

Good letter, Mrs. Kiraly. I hope you're able to move forward with important dialogue, to combat this terrible issue that affects so many.

Ms. Kiraly, are you advocating for racism when it’s time to vote, regardless of experience or having a valid platform, just to meet an Asian quota? I’m sorry but these messages of so-called equal representation (and not only from you) serve to promote racism and resentment. Would you use your position to promote only Asian/Asian American interests above those of other ethnicities? If not, why would you advocate only for more Asian American candidates instead of qualified candidates who look after the interests of Americans? Or maybe your letter is just an attempt to get your “piece of the pie” since many others are promoting racism to capitalize on this current idiotic “woke” period in American history?
