If you have a hard time looking at photos of President Donald Trump or Elon Musk, think about putting down the newspaper for a spell and doing something else. That something else should not be to call the newspaper, ask for the editor and yell at him to stop putting photos of President Trump or Elon Musk in the paper.
We do make the choice of putting in photos of Trump and Musk because they are attached to news stories that affect us. It’s not to upset anyone, it’s to inform everyone.
The general rule when it comes to news is that we put items in the paper that are news. Trump and Musk make news, which means it affects people like you and me. We want you to be informed of this.
We will not stop putting in photos or stories about people you dislike. Otherwise, I think we could only run stories on Dolly Parton and puppies. As appealing as that may be, that’s not what we do.
So, feel free to take a break from reading if it’s too much, but calling or emailing us to ask we stop running stories about the president of the United States or his new friend doing lots of different things will not be very effective.

We have new rules for our online comment section that basically state no one is allowed to insult writers or others making comments. I’ve been disappointed with how easily awful insults come to some who comment on our site. We can disagree, but we don’t have to be disparaging. Hopefully, this will work and we can keep the comments section online.
For those who think this amounts to censorship, let me present an analogy. Say I run a restaurant where the staff takes great care to present dishes with honest ingredients and creativity, with good service and a pleasant and professional atmosphere. In one corner of the restaurant, however, there is a gathered group who are yelling and insulting one another. You’d ask them to pipe down too, right? Or just take it outside. Same thing with this. Be civilized, or I’ll ask you to take your discussion elsewhere. It’s only fair to our staff and other patrons.

The downtown San Mateo Caltrain station should have operating restrooms. While it is nice to have restrooms on the train, there are times those waiting could use something at the station. Countless times people have asked me where restrooms are nearby and I have to send them on a hopeful mission to a nearby coffee shop. Along the same lines, public restrooms in downtown areas should be available as well.
I know there is a small cost, but it’s budget dust for a government agency. Besides, it’s both the humane and clean thing to do as I’ve seen people using areas like stairwells and dark corners for that purpose. And that’s not good for anyone.

There has been a lot of discussion about the safety of streets in San Mateo, especially in North Central. One idea is to have one-way streets. Creative, but it would cost too much and be confusing. Besides, every single street can accommodate even two large vehicles coming at each other in nearly all instances. Drivers may have to slow down to make sure they have enough space, but isn’t that a good thing? Along those lines, reducing the speed limit by 5 mph from 25 to 20 on even the arterials may do a world of good to ensure pedestrian and bicycle safety. Aren’t we aiming for slow streets in dense neighborhoods? This is an easy and cheap way to do it as long as it’s enforced.
As someone who has had two meniscus surgeries (I even know how to spell it), I can assure you the recovery can be a challenge. Seeing U.S. Rep. Kevin Mullin, D-South San Francisco, go straight from a 10-day hospital stay for treatment of an infection from meniscus surgery to Capitol Hill to vote on a budget bill was pretty impressive. It was an all-hands-on-deck moment, and Mullin rose to the occasion, walker and all.
Here is hoping for a better recovery from here on out.

Jon - any attempt to improve the tone of the discussion should be welcomed, but I fear that the horse may have left the barn a long time ago. I think that a lot of people who might have wanted to participate in the SMDJ online discussion are already discouraged by the tone of comment section contributions and may not come back for some time.
This tone sadly is reflective of the state of our country at large and sanctioned at the top with the latest example occurring at the White House during the Trump, Zelensky, and Vance exchange yesterday. (By the way - I watched the entire press conference on C-SPAN to avoid prejudicial video clip selection, and it seemed to be going reasonably well until Vance jumped in about 39:50 into the video - see https://www.c-span.org/program/white-house-event/president-trump-meets-with-ukrainian-president-zelensky/656418 )
If you try to correct insulting behavior in the SMDJ comments section, I guarantee that you will be accused of “censorship.” Vice President Vance is currently delivering exactly this message to several of our NATO allies when clearly the biggest such offender in terms of censorship is “President” Putin.
However, as editor of the paper, it is your job to decide what to publish. Those who disagree with you have the right to take their patronage elsewhere.
On the other hand, DavidKristofferson, I’m a bit more optimistic and I’m hoping folks will come back to the DJ, boosted with the assistance of current subscribers spreading the word that personal attacks will ideally decrease and we can return to a better online commenting environment. As Trump always say, “Let’s see what happens.”
It’s interesting you watch the Zelensky press conference and arrive at the conclusion that Vance was at fault. I’d recommend you rerun the video and take note of Zelensky’s body language in addition to his aggressive and argumentative stances. Regardless, I’m glad the press conference was aired and we could get an inside look at foreign policy discussions (how the sauce is made). BTW, it should be noted that Lindsey Graham, the man who never saw a war he didn’t like, agreed with Trump and his actions toward Zelensky. If that’s not the perfect endorsement for Trump/Vance’s actions, it sure is close.
Although I’m already proud of Trump and his Making America Great Again, I’m becoming more proud of Vance and his stances and acumen in dealing with domestic and foreign affairs. If Trump doesn’t get a third or fourth term, I believe Vance is in the lead to succeed Trump. If you’ve been reading reports from our NATO and European “allies” and their attempts at censorship, you’ll see that Vance was correct and perfectly on the mark with his message.
Meanwhile, I’m hoping the US gets out of NATO and we can let others pay for/fight the war with Russia. Reports today indicate Slovakia is pulling out of providing cash or arms for Ukraine’s endless war. At least with Trump’s plan, Europe might get their $billion loans repaid. Without Trump’s plan, not only will Europe/NATO lose repayment of their $billion loans, they may lose their military-age citizens. Not sure many of their citizens will be thrilled at that result.
Since you give Jon Mays, as editor, the job of deciding what to publish, you should also give President Trump’s efforts to Make America Great Again, Again, that same respect. Those who disagree with President Trump have the right to take their citizenship elsewhere. I should remind you though, as Vance did, that the number of places allowing free speech appears to be dwindling, especially in the EU. Have a Trump-tastic day! Great to see you back on these pages.
Very possible, Mr. Kristofferson. Need I remind you that many said our great President Trump would never become President once, much less twice? At this point, Ukraine losing Slovakia means losing more weapons and aid. Slovakia may be the first of many dominoes... A few European countries have thus far refused to commit troops to Ukraine. I expect that to continue along with a reduction/end in supplying weapons and money.
Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to lose more soldiers and land. In time, if they prolong the war, I predict Ukraine will return to the fold as an SSR. Who knows, maybe Slovakia will ally with Russia and Slovakia will expand their territory so they can recoup payments/loans made to Ukraine. As our great President Trump always says, “Let’s see what happens.” A reminder: there’s a non-SOTU SOTU-like speech tonight. Is Pelosi going to rip up the speech, again? As before, I hope Pelosi remembers to pre-rip the document to get a “running” start. Have a Trump-tastic day!
Terrence - Events, not fanciful scenarios spun out here, will determine history. The stakes could not be higher. Either you will be right and Trump will be proven to be “our great President,” or else there is a not insignificant chance that the world could descend into chaos. It is my sincere hope for the future of our country and the world that things turn out well and that our leader actually knows what he is doing, but reasonable people have every right to be very concerned that this may not happen. That’s all that I have to say here on this topic. You can have the last word as usual.
Changing the suggestion "Be nice" to a mandatory "Keep the discussion civilized" is a great move. Thanks, Jon. Everyone can still express their POV, but the focus will have to be on positions not personalities. Maybe a hundred years ago, Albert C. Nock encouraged young journalists to have a point and to make sure their pieces were well-written in idiomatic English. DJ readers can do the same without insults.
Jon, I hope you take the additional step and disallow aliases - the two anti-Semitic smears aimed at me within the SMDJ comments section was someone who felt comfortable doing so because he was hiding behind an alias. I truly don’t think that would happen if everyone’s name is clearly visible.
The only possible solution to traffic safety is real "Vision Zero", which San Mateo is bragging to have adopted since 2015 (with little physical evidence to prove it exists here).
Vision Zero states that "education", "enforcement", even well meant PSAs cannot lead to success as people will always, always, always make mistakes.
Reducing Speed:
There is a law that allows the city to reduce speeds around schools to 15mph very easily. It's been on the books for maybe 15 years already.
There is a new law (I believe AB43) that would make it even easier to do this around schools, business centers, basically almost anywhere in most cities.
Few San Mateo cities are using it. And since San Mateo cities have kind of given up on traffic enforcement, it wouldn't matter to much.
The only viable solution is reducing speed through engineering. And you need to do this through solid traffic engineering - not just speed humps.
Separating Speed:
Workplace Safety programs show over and over again, heavy machinery and vulnerable workers don't mix well, so they get separated as much as possible. The same is true for traffic safety. Heavy, oversized, tuned-up machinery does not mix well with vulnerable road users. They are constantly overlooked - especially with distracted driving going up not down.
The only possible solution for Humboldt Street bike lanes is to keep the bike lanes and enforce municipal codes. Landlords have transformed their garages and driveways into living and storage space and now want society to pay for their car storage on public property. Municipal codes encourage residents to store at least 4 vehicles on their own property and only a few households have more than that.
If municipal codes would be enforced in this neighborhood, children could keep their Safe-Routes-To-School.
So in the end the key sentence is still "as long as it’s enforced".
Thanks for your column today, Mr. Mays, passing along a little bit of this, a little bit of that. It is amusing to hear folks are complaining about photos of Trump and Musk. I never really thought about it. Maybe to ease some of the complaints, Trump’s mug shot photo can be used. I wasn’t surprised you would raise some hackles with your 80 mph “recommendation” although in reality, we do see many freeway drivers at that speed. 75 mph would have been a good compromise. Perhaps you can expand these new online rules to LTE’s. Else you may begin receiving more “insulting” LTEs from contributors rather than online comments. Regardless, I look forward to this new “golden age” of online commenting.
Can I still insult Kevin Mullin though? (Kidding- I wish him the best in his recovery and I'm sure he will be back soon to voting the exact opposite way I wish he would on all legislation.)
I agree with your new policy and hope it is applied fairly to all commenters regardless of political opinion (including DJ writers if they choose to wade into the comment section.) The comment section can take a very negative turn and I have not always been at my best either. But I hope we can all try to debate issues using facts and well reasoned opinions, not insults.
