While I was jubilant at 8 p.m. on election night when Sen. Barack Obama won the presidency, that enthusiasm slowly dissipated as the results of Proposition 8 started to come in. As we listened to President-elect Obama speak so eloquently, the Proposition 8 results made it clear that one community is still left behind, still allowed to be attacked, still vilified by people blinded by religious dogma -- the LGBT community. There is much work to be done to right the injustices that we face on a daily basis across this great country.
However, the wonderful wedding that my husband Andrew and I celebrated in June and the marriage we have today can never be taken away. We are stronger than any blatant attempts by so called "moralists" to strip us of our dignity and self worth. We refuse to be victims, but rather, stronger in our commitment to ensuring that all Americans truly enjoy the promise of America and all the rights and responsibilities that go along with that promise.
For those of you who supported Prop. 8, no matter what your religious beliefs, this still is a country that believes in separation of church and state, and no religion should ever be used to deny rights such as civil marriage to anyone. I respect your right to your beliefs, but I do not respect the imposition of those religious beliefs on the rest of us via legislation. Thankfully, over 5 million Californians agreed with us.
In the meantime, lawsuits have been filed with the California Supreme Court, and we are hopeful the court will see the injustice and unconstitutionality of Proposition 8.
