Mary Patricia Viri, a resident of San Mateo for 77 years, passed away August 12 at the age of 101 years. A native of Junee, New South Wales, Mary arrived in San Francisco as an Australian war bride aboard the then troop ship USS Lurline, joining her US Soldier husband, Rinaldo R. Viri in 1945. Rinaldo passed away in 2000 after 57 years of marriage. After his passing, Mary became a dedicated full-time volunteer for 17 years in the Parish office at St. Timothy Church in San Mateo where she was responsible for a variety of tasks supporting administrative and parishioner needs.

After raising her three children, Mary sought higher education in a 1970s re-entry program for women at College of San Mateo. She earned an Associate of Arts degree in Drama and Writing with high honors in 1982 and had also performed in supporting roles in CSM dramatic productions of Henrik Ibsen’s Peer Gynt and Jean Anouilh’s The Lark.
