SANTA CRUZ — Santa Cruz County sheriff’s deputies say a family dispute may have prompted a shooting that’s left a man and his stepfather dead.
Deputies responded to the home in the Santa Cruz Mountains after the man’s wife called 911 Thursday morning when she heard gunfire. She had been inside the home with the couple’s three children and ran outside to find her husband fatally shot.
Deputies found the man’s body on the porch of the house. His stepfather, believed to be the shooter, was found dead in the woods nearby with a rifle.
Authorities have not released the identities of the two dead. It’s unclear what the dispute was over.
Neighbors say the family seemed close, with no apparent problems, and deputies say they’ve never been called to the house before.
